Gay, Lesbian, Trans-genderd, Trans-sexual, Queer, Hubba – Homo Sapien?

Queer Pride IndiaFor the last one week, Bangalore has been hosting its second queer pride festival. While it is nothing like the Mardi Gras-esq ones in  Europe,  it has a well planned and relevant itinerary. The main motivation for the pride marches is is the attitude of our law to the LGTB community.

Homosexuals in India are legally criminals. Section 377 of the IPC says that anyone who has ‘carnal intercourse against the order of nature’ may be imprisoned for up to 10 years. In the days it was drafted, anything from oral sex to even using a condom was considered unnatural. In spite of the British having left, and much of the unnatural having become natural and normal, this archaic law that discriminates against homosexuals is still in place. Though India has long stopped prosecuting consensual couples under the law, it is still a source of exploitation and places power in wrong hands.

What bothers me the most in about the gay rights discussion is the misplaced focus from the real problem facing trans-genders and people with alternate sexual preferences. Gay rights isn’t about the right to practice sodomy, it is about the right to be treated like a human being. It is about being allowed to be a Indian citizen, a valued part of the democracy.

That the pride marches are allowed and encouraged even, is a clear sign of the very high tolerance levels of the aam admi, as well as rising awareness about these issues. One must also concede that the non interference of the law enforcement agencies with the pride marches are an indication that law and policy have changed, if not on paper, certainly in the minds of people.

There is no doubt that the coming years are going to see definite and positive change towards equality and dignity. I think we can be confident that the day when pride marches are not demonstrations but festivals is not too far away.

You are lying to yourself

Have you ever wondered why its difficult to do things you really enjoy? Does that seem like a contradiction?

Ever sat down to read a book and discovered you were extremely distracted? Or how about how you never seem to be in the “mood’ to paint these days?

“If you love something, you will find it easy to do” is one of the worst lies you can tell yourself.

No one wakes up one fine day at the age of 27 and types out a best selling novel. You have to work at your passions and to be able to really enjoy them.

So if you love writing and your excuse is that you are not in the “mood” or “flow”, start writing, the mood will come.

In relationships this principle is called “passion follows actions” and in religion; “orthodoxy follows orthopraxy”.

So, if you love writing, trekking, painting, singing, and you find that it doesn’t “flow”, its because there’s a huge dam of inactivity sitting across it.

If you Love something, work at it.

Its Story time. Soon.

I have been trying unsuccessfully to write my first blog post on this Blog. I wanted to explain why I am starting so many new blogs and particularly why I was dumping The Blog of Dysfunction which has been my main outlet of writing and connecting for the last five years.

Unfortunately as soon as I power up my word processor, all my ideas scuttle away, much like cockroaches when you turn the lights on.

So this is a meta post, a post about my in-ability to write a post. But since I am here and the words seem to be not too constipated, I am going to brave my demons and list all the stuff I want to blog about on this blog, which has no cool name yet.

I want to write about why I cant write under the header of the Blog Of Dysfunction; in short because I am no longer dysfunctional.

I want to post book reviews, I have read over fifty books in the last year. Not counting the numerous free ebooks on the net and pirated ebooks books

I want to write about what I have learnt in what is definitely the most eventful year of my life so far.

I want to write about my travel experiences and share photos.

I want to write about my hospital (I dont own it, I just work there) and its needs and my dreams for its future.

Basically, this will be more or less another narcissistic personal blog. But since its me who is doing the writing, it will be profound, subtle and light at the same time.

Yep, y’all are in for a great ride. So wish me luck and tighten the seat belts, itsss sssstory time!!!
